Eden, Seat of the Sanctum

Welcome back to Day 44! Today’s land Eden, Seat of the Sanctum, came out this year in Final Fantasy. Thanks to the number of people chasing the rares in collector and play booster packs, many of the cards in the set are actually affordable as singles. Eden comes in at just $0.07 and $0.25 for the foil.

Eden, Seat of the Sanctum, in my opinion is a very average land. It produces a colorless mana and has a very expensive activated ability, which costs 5 mana. After paying the 5 mana and tapping Eden, you mill 2 cards and then are able to sack Eden in exchange for returning a permanent to your hand. The strength of this ability and the cost of it balances out to create a land that will often, and currently is, essentially forgotten.

The type of decks that can run Eden the best have some combination with black, self-mill decks, and earthbending decks. Or some combination of the three. In black or self-mill you have cards like Stitcher’s Supplier or Sidisi, Brood Tyrant which allow you to mill cards and fill your graveyard.. Eden, despite the cost, gives you an extra way to get that card out of the graveyard at instant speed. This can be a very useful way to counter graveyard hate, at least for one card you might need. In earthbending decks, which I feel like I bring up all the time, turning Eden into a creature can make Eden’s ability more affordable, and allow you to recur Eden at the same time. This works because by turing Eden into a creature, ability cost reducing cards, like Training Grounds, can now affect Eden. This takes the activated ability’s cost down to 3, a much more reasonable cost for this ability.
