Muscovites have been laying floral tributes at the scene of Tuesday's bomb blast which killed seven people and injured nearly a hundred others.

So far police have questioned two suspects as the authorities try to reassure nervous Muscovites - Tuesday's attack has left many people worried that the city faces a new campaign of terror bombings.

Some people have begun to check basements and other possible hiding places in their apartment buildings.

Russian troops have been fighting Chechen separatists in the Caucasus for about one year and officials often blame Chechens and the leaders of other ethnic groups for terrorism in Russian cities.

But Chechen rebel leaders have denied their forces were responsible for the attack.

Muscovites at the scene of the blast complained that security is lax.

Other city dwellers are upset after years of blasts.

Soldiers and police patrol heavily populated areas hoping their presence will be a deterrent to any further terrorists attacks.

Security personnel are doing random checks of identity papers.

Truck drivers are also being stopped on the outskirts of the city, their loads inspected for any evidence of bomb making materials.
