Since then he's fought to have religious education removed from all state schools, rather than parents having to 'opt out' of classes individually.

A hearing today sees bible lessons provider the Churches Education Commission enter the fray.

Is it time to re-look at our religious education classes?

Massey University History Professor Peter Lineham joined Paul Henry this morning and says schools need religious studies.

"[We need to] include education about Christianity, but it also includes education about all the other cultures and religions that are in our society.

Mr Lineham says religious education has to be delivered and taught by the classroom teacher not a volunteer from the community.
