A powerful winter storm, accompanied by strong winds and snowfalls, has hit the north of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia. At least 40 cm (16 inches) of snow fell in various parts of the Pyrenees, Catalan News reports.
Snow has blanketed the western Pyrenees, with the areas of Val d'Aran, Alta Ribagorza and Pallars Sobira being the worst hit. The highest winter precipitation was recorded by the Catalan Meteorological Service in Tavascan with 37 cm (15 inches), in Vielha with 28 cm (11 inches) and in Puigcerdà with 21 cm (8 inches).
Emergency services have received numerous calls from local residents regarding the snowstorm. Rescuers have pulled dozens of cars out of the snowdrifts. Some roads have been blocked as a result of the snowstorm.

Wind gusts in some areas of Catalonia reached 115 km/h (71 mph).

The stormy weather, without snowfall, also affected areas of Barcelona not usually subject to such strong winds. The 112 hotline received about 1,700 calls, mainly from the districts of Barcelona, ​​Tarragones and Baix Camp.

At least two people were injured as a result of the stormy weather.
