I have started several dogs as pups in the same manner as we are starting Cam, he is about 9 weeks old. Pups use their nose as soon as they are born to find milk, so it makes sense to let them use it naturally to find a good meal. I like to give the command track as I put the pup on the scent.

The scent is just a little water mixed in with whatever the treat is. It does not have to be anything special, or even blood for that matter. At this point in a pups life, you just want to establish a bond, trust and learn a few commands. In this case: Track.

He quickly decides he wants breakfast, and the dog food and leftover egg smelling water smells good enough to him. He works back and forth, eventually finding the food. This track was only about 20 yards.

I let Cam find his food twice previously, on super short, straight tracks: 10 yards or less, so he kinda knew what to expect.

I also uncovered the fact that Cam is a growler at the food bowl. LOL. He is not too scary now, but I'll have to get ahead of this before he gets to be his full 65 pounds. Biting at the food bowl can be a problem for a family dog.

I will research the best ways to guard against this, but today each time he growled at me while I was petting him as he ate I picked him up and told him no. Then, I made sure to give him plenty of non aggressive contact, ie: petting, around his head, neck and face, while he ate. It seemed to work.
