Using Foam in Firefighting

Foam is used in firefighting to combat Class B fires (flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, and alcohol) or to prevent their spread. It is also used to cool surfaces and prevent reignition in some Class A fires (solid combustibles like wood and paper). Foam works by cutting off oxygen and cooling the surface of the fuel.

Types of Foam and Their Concentrations

1. AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam):

Concentration: 1% to 6%

Application: Used for fires caused by flammable liquids. It forms a thin film over the fuel, stopping vapor production.

2. AR-AFFF (Alcohol-Resistant AFFF):

Concentration: 3% to 6%

Application: Ideal for fires involving polar liquids like alcohols and esters.

3. Protein Foam:

Concentration: 3% to 6%

Application: Suitable for fires caused by hydrocarbon-based fuels. Made from natural protein materials, it’s effective for Class B fires.

4. High Expansion Foam:

Concentration: 2% to 3%

Application: Used to quickly fill large spaces, such as warehouses and underground mines.

5. Synthetic Foam:

Concentration: 1% to 3%

Application: Used in large-scale fires or areas with limited water resources.

Turbex Device and Its Functionality

The Turbex device is an advanced firefighting tool designed to generate and distribute high-quality foam during fire suppression operations. It mixes water and foam to create the desired foam solution and delivers it under pressure to the fire site. Turbex is commonly used for industrial fires, storage tank fires, oil platforms, and high-risk environments.

The video you are watching showcases a firefighting team’s training session on using the Turbex device. This exercise focuses on preparing the equipment, adjusting foam concentrations, and effectively deploying the device for fire suppression.
