The son of an English mother and a Greek father, Alex Kapranos moved from England to Scotland when he was a child in the 1970s. He quickly became a staple of the Glasgow underground music scene in the '90s, playing in various local bands including Yummy Fur with drummer Paul Thomson. Yummy Fur broke up in 1999 and Alex recruited guitarist Nick McCarthy and bassist Bob Hardy, along with Thomson, to form a new band. Its name was inspired by a racehorse called Archduke Ferdinand, which the musicians saw win the Northumberland Plate, but of course the horse was named for the real Archduke Franz Ferdinand whose assassination was the flashpoint that triggered World War I. Says Kapranos, "His life, or at least the ending of it, was the catalyst for the complete transformation of the world and that is what we want our music to be." Their eponymous debut was originally only a minor hit on the Billboard 200 but heavy rotation of single "Take Me Out" on MTV, along with strong energetic touring efforts, eventually drove sales of 3.6 million copies worldwide. Their second album went platinum one time, and their third album only gold, and the next two albums were only minor hits. But in 2025, the band came back strong with The Human Fear, and an absolute banger of a tune called "Hooked". The song would not sound out of place in a Justin Timberlake album from 20 years ago, yet remains distinctively Ferdinand.
