This is my Musicman Stingray BFR Passive in Okoume that I bought in 2020 used from reverb. I am the second owner. I’ve experimented with lots of stings and found I enjoy the Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flatwound Bass Guitar Strings - .043-.100 4-string Long Scale 34" the best and the sponge.

Neck is amazing. perfect size, not too thin, just chunky enough and the satin finish is super playable. The flamed wood on the back is beautiful.

Wood: Okoume. Super lightweight and VERY comfortable strapped on. Really pretty, sweet tea look. I love the classic throwback stingray with the marsh mellow humbucker and black pickguard. S'mores.

Passive electronics! Knobs are 1-volume, with a P/P boost to give it an active kind of feel, 2-three-way rotary pickup switch, and 3-tone.

How does it sound? It sounds like a Stingray. If you were blindfolded and someone was playing it, you would definitely guess stingray. But a unique Stingray...maybe one that was EQ'd a bit differently, maybe running through a unique rig. A little bit warmer than a classic stingray...but definitely not a vintage sound either, so don't think that just b/c of the passive electronics. The E and A strings put out a lot of punch and growl. I'm also getting a lot of midrange overall, and I mean a lot. Really Woody. Definitely one that will cut through the mix significantly. The signal boost option is cool and does give it more of an active feel, but it doesn't have that hot feel, you'll get with the Active electronics...especially with the highs. The rotary switch has 3 tone options, but really only 2 make sense, b/c the middle is pretty noisy. The other two focus more on the bridge side and the neck side of the pickup respectively. I'd argue the neck side is going to give you more of a classic ray sound, and be the more go-to. I did find that the bass kind of lost its mojo on the higher strings...there really seemed to be a big discrepancy when I started playing on those even if I added a little compression through my rig. But super fun to play. So Will Musicman start using this style of electronics in future productions...why not? I think its a cool option...despite active is really part of the stingray legacy.

On this recording I used OBS to record a live video recording then uploaded straight to YouTube.
The audio is a mix of 2112 sans amp into a Ampeg 810 split to 2 410 with all knobs 1/2 way up. Also mics and 2 DI inputs mixed with the R&B track from Pickupmusic.com. Super fun
