This is an arrangement of themes from the 1988 Chinese television saga, “Dream of the Red Chamber”, composed by Wang Liping.

"Dream of the Red Chamber" (also called "The Story of the Stone") is a masterwork of Classic Chinese literature, one of the so-called Four Great Classic Novels ("si da mingzhu"); the semi-autobiographical magnum opus of Qing-dynasty author, Cao Xueqin, recounts the declining fortunes of the aristocratic Jia clan. The epic novel is lauded for the expository depth of its observations on the societal etiquettes, expectations, and conflicts experienced in 18th century China, the psychological exploration of personality types developing in a Confucian framework, and the author's meditations on religion and philosophy. The story existed in manuscript form in the mid-18th century, with the first printed edition circulating in 1791 (some 27 or 28 years after Cao Xueqin’s death).

根據大陸電視連續劇「紅樓夢」中的音樂片段和歌曲改編而成，作品完成於1988年五月。作者以「滿腔愁懷，無限感慨」的樂思，表達了曹雪芹筆下的「紅樓夢」中各人物的真情所在----深沉，含蓄，優美，質樸；並以鮮明的民族特色，洗鍊的傳統創作手法；並以飽含真情，開掘新意於優雅，這是作者創作「紅樓夢」音樂的特有風格。 全曲共分八個樂章：(一)嘆紅樓；(二)晴雯曲；(三)大出殯；(四)劉姥姥；(五)寶黛情；(六)上元節；(七)分骨肉；(八)葬花吟。本次演出擇一、二、四、六、七、八等六個樂章演出。
