Yes, it’s very scary but there are possible risks of raw fish used for sushi/sashimi having parasites called “ANISAKIS.” Accidentally ingesting these parasites may cause severe abdominal pain and vomiting.

These are some things you can do to avoid pain caused by these parasites…

1. Check visually
2. Avoid eating fish that are likely hosts of these parasites (mackerel, horse mackerel, saury, bonito, sardines, salmon, squid)
3. Freeze the fish below -20C° for more than 24 hours

Although this story might seem scary (and was widely broadcasted
in Japan too), I’ve never even heard of anyone actually suffering from anisakis before.

My father loved fishing and we often ate raw fish at home, but all my family members never experienced any food poisoning. Obviously the sushi restaurants will be even more careful, otherwise they’ll get sued and will have to shut down their business, so I would say you don’t have to worry that much.
