কমলা লেবুর মত আকৃতিসম্পন্ন পৃথিবীর একদম তলদেশে অবস্থিত মহাদেশটির নাম অ্যান্টার্কটিকা। আর দ্বিমাত্রিক সমতলে আঁকা বিশ্ব মানচিত্রে এই মহাদেশের অবস্থান সর্ব দক্ষিণে। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই পৃথিবীর চৌম্বকীয় আবেশের দক্ষিণ মেরুটিও এই মহাদেশেই অবস্থিত। কিন্তু অন্য অনেক হিসেবেই মহাদেশগুলোর তালিকায় প্রথম অবস্থানটি এই অ্যান্টার্কটিকার দখলে।

পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে উচ্চতম, শীতলতম এবং শুষ্কতম মহাদেশ এন্টার্কটিকা। এশিয়া, আফ্রিকা, উত্তর আমেরিকা এবং দক্ষিণ আমেরিকার পরে , এই মহাদেশের অবস্থান। এর আয়তন প্রায় ১৪ মিলিয়ন বর্গকিলোমিটার। তাছাড়া বিশ্বে বরফ হিসেবে জমাটবদ্ধ সুপেয় পানির শতকরা প্রায় নব্বই ভাগই এই মহাদেশে অবস্থিত। অ্যান্টার্কটিকার এমন অর্জনের তালিকা বেশ দীর্ঘ। অন্যদিকে বিশ্বের মহাদেশগুলোর মধ্যে দুর্গমতম হওয়ায় এই অ্যান্টার্কটিকা নিয়ে গুজবেরও কমতি নেই কোন। যেমন ধরুন, পৃথিবী সৌরজগতের অন্য গ্রহগুলোর মত গোলাকার নয়, এমন উদ্ভট দাবির সমর্থকরা মনে করেন, অ্যান্টার্কটিকা মহাদেশ আসলে পুরো পৃথিবীকে ঘিরে রাখা একটি বরফের দেয়াল মাত্র। তবে এ ধরণের বিশ্বাস এবং বক্তব্য অ্যান্টার্কটিকা এবং পৃথিবী সম্পর্কে নিজের অজ্ঞতারই বহিঃপ্রকাশ।
