Flying with a dog or puppy can be very stressful if you are not properly prepared. Here are the top 5 tips for flying with a puppy that will make flying with your four-legged friend a lot easier!
1. HAVE PAPERWORK FROM YOUR VET
When flying with a puppy you will need a health certificate from your veterinarian. This certification is required by most airlines when flying with your dog (excluding Southwest Airlines). But it is always wise to get this certificate just to be on the safe side!

2. KNOW YOUR AIRLINE’S REGULATIONS
Most airlines require you to call ahead before purchasing your ticket. To ensure they have not reached their pet limit on that specific flight. The pet limit is usually 6 pets per flight in cabin. Be sure to check, call ahead before booking your flight. There will be a fee for flying with your pet. This can range from $95 to $250, depending on your airline. As of right now, Southwest Airlines is the cheapest at $95 per pet.

3. YOUR PET MUST REMAIN IN A CARRIER
This carrier must be airline approved, with 3 part ventilation. The carrier must also be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you (so your dog must be able to fit as well:). You can only take your pet out of this carrier when your dog is going to the bathroom and must remain in the carrier during the entirety of the flight. There are different rules regarding service animals.

4. THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP (HOW TO KEEP YOUR PET CALM DURING THE FLIGHT)
If your pet is barking and causing a disturbance, the airline has the right to not let the dog fly on the plane. The best way to ensure your dog stays cool, calm, and collected during the entire flight is to tire them out for at least 30 minutes right before boarding your flight. There are pet relief areas in most airports. These are made just for dogs to use the bathroom, get a drink, eat, and in this case get some energy out prior to the flight.

5. TREATS FOR THE TRIP
If your dog does start whining or barking during your flight you should be prepared with toys and treats in your carry on luggage. This is the best way to keep your puppy occupied if it is awake and starting to get bored. Have multiple toy and treat options for your puppy.

BONUS TIP: GETTING THROUGH SECURITY
A lot of people think that going through security with a puppy will be difficult and not worth the headache. But it is just the opposite! TSA staff is very helpful and oftentimes you can get through faster when you are flying with a puppy. After all, who doesn’t love puppies?
