"Some athletes they lost someone, some athletes are on the frontline, we have some athletes who died in the war and they can't be here, so of course it's difficult, it's tough on the heart, on the soul. But we are here for all Ukrainians, Ukraine, we represent our country and we are so proud of that, we are honored. All these medals we are presenting this to Ukraine and are dedicated to our troops who are defending us, and everything for that."

"In my heart I have different emotions right now: I have part happiness because I can bring all these medals to my country, which also brought some joy for people, some minutes of cheering (inaudible), and at the same time I have really sad emotions, of course, I'm devastated for what is happening every day, bombing every day, killing people every day. We are losing people every day."

STORYLINE:
Ukrainian fencers Olga Kharlan and Olena Kravatska received a rapturous reception at Ukraine House in Paris on Sunday after winning their first gold medals in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

"All these medals are for Ukraine and are dedicated to our troops who are defending us," said Kharlan.

On Friday, Kharlan got the winning touch, ripped off her fencing mask and sank to her knees.

When she got up again, it was to dance on the piste wrapped in a Ukrainian flag and join teammates Alina Komashchuk, Olena Kravatska and Yuliia Bakastova in celebration.

Facing South Korea’s Jeon Ha-young, Kharlan said she realized the key right then was to relax.

She did just that, and scored the eight points Ukraine needed for a 45-42 victory.

Ukraine had two medals in Paris before Saturday's final; a silver in shooting from Serhiy Kulish and the bronze that Kharlan won Monday.

Now Kharlan is heading back to Ukraine next week for the first time since April to see her parents.
