The minister in charge of local government, Steve Reed, has confirmed 29 English councils due to hold elections in May will now have them postponed until 2027 (with one more request still being decided).

Labour says the delays are needed because councils are being reorganised into new “unitary” authorities, and it doesn’t want to run elections for councils that may be scrapped soon.

Opposition parties say it denies voters their say and could damage trust in democracy. The Electoral Commission has also warned delays risk harming public confidence.
