Gather your hair in a ponytail, then use your thumb to pull a loop of the hair through your off hand.

Coil the remaining hair around the base of the loop. Make it snug, but it doesn’t need to be tight.

With the hand that held the ponytail in place, feel to make sure the loop is basically intact.

Use both hands to spread the loop open around the coil of hair at the base.

Holding the bun in place, take the chopstick and insert it at the seam of the bun, such that it goes “over” the opened loop, and slides through the coiled hair. As you move the chopstick into place, it will feel like a lever, gently tightening and securing the bun.

With your index finger kept in the seam on the other side of the bun, feel for the tip of the chopstick.

Slide the chopstick through until it feels about right.
