Curly horses were first discovered in the United States in 1898 on the territory of a mountain range in Central Nevada. The origin and history of this fairly ancient horse breed are not known for certain. There is a version about the kinship of American Bashkirs with Russian Bashkir horses of the Ural Mountains. It is also assumed that the ancestor of the breed may be the Tajik Lokai horse. Another assumption is that these horses could have crossed the ice strait to America during the last ice age. Be that as it may, the modern history of the breed began in 1898, after the discovery of three unusually strange curly horses in Nevada by Peter Demel. He took them to his ranch and started breeding them. From there they spread throughout America. The breed was officially registered in 1971, and the stud book was also opened at the same time.
The height of the American Curly Bashkir horse is from 147 to 150 cm.
The representatives of this breed have a heavy broad-fronted head, oriental-type eyes, a short and muscular neck, a proportional and well-muscled body. The body of these horses is wide and deep, the back is straight, and the limbs are relatively short, with broad bones and firm, good hooves. The mane, tail and wool of this breed are thick and lush.
At the same time, the peculiarity of the breed is the curliness of the wool.A characteristic feature of the breed is also the shedding of hair on the tail and mane in the summer, and its regrowth in the winter. What is more, the curliness gene in these horses is dominant, and they persistently pass it on by inheritance. And the fur of these animals is absolutely non-allergenic.
Children's toys are made from their woolen yarn and warm things are knitted.
These horses are very hardy, persistent, adapted to life even in the harshest conditions. This is one of the most hardened breeds – they can live outdoors at temperatures up to -40°C.
The American Curly Horse lends itself well to training, it is easy to ride and tame. These animals have a friendly, docile character and a meek disposition. They are suitable for both agricultural work and sports.
This breed of horses is used in agriculture, at horse shows, in sports, such as riding under saddle.
