Each year, reports come in from around the country about people or pets getting sick, and some pets actually die due to contact with this algae. Safety with such things is really a matter of being aware of them and knowing what one can do to protect yourself. The EPA has put together a very nice resource page on Cyanobateria, the blue-green algae, that can at times release toxins, and how to identify and manage this kind of algae bloom.
