A football association has told players to stop saying “come on lads” and use “come on team” instead, calling the phrase outdated and non-inclusive.

Berks and Bucks FA’s new inclusive language guide also advises replacing “linesman” with “assistant referee”, using “they” if unsure of pronouns, and saying “bring your partner” instead of “bring your wife”.

The FA says the changes will create a “more welcoming environment”, but critics branded the move “sinister” and a distortion of everyday language.

The guide covers over 600 clubs and 34,000 players across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
