Zarine Viccajee shares with us the remarkable story of Avanbai Mansions and her great-great-great-grandfather, a young Parsi trader who came to Lucknow during Mohammad Ali Shah's reign in the mid-19th century and became Lucknow's first Parsi settler from his community.

What began as one man's commercial venture transformed into a family dynasty that has weathered centuries, with Zarine, her kids, and Ruuddi Kapur still inhabiting this Italian-designed architectural gem.

Zarine has been a lecturer for 22 years and has held several prestigious positions, including serving as President of Avadh Girls Degree College and a member of its Managing Committee. She has distinguished herself in several fields of social and public life and collected many accolades and awards along the way.

This mansion isn't just remarkable because of its earthquake-resistant built or its blend of colonial modularity with Awadhi craftsmanship. It's the stories hidden in its walls. There existed a carriage workshop on the ground floor where temperamental nawabs commissioned their Cabriolets and Victorias and came to test them out before buying them. Once a rather healthy nawab got stuck inside his own carriage and had to be rescued from his own carriage by breaking it open.
