Film-maker Leena Manimekalai has courted controversy after she tweeted a poster of her recent documentary in which the Goddess Kali is shown smoking. The poster was heavily criticised for its objectionable content and it led to a police complaint against the film-maker.

Hours after the poster created an uproar with thousands slamming the film-maker, Manimekalai issued clarification on Twitter. Reacting to the controversy, she said that the film revolves around the events that take place one evening when Goddess Kali appears and strolls on the streets of Toronto.

The film-maker who tweeted in Tamil went on to say that she does not have anything to lose. She stated that she wanted to be with a voice that speaks without fear of anything. In her subsequent tweet in Tamil, she said, "If the price is my life, I will give it."

The tweet which she posted on Sunday shows a woman dressed as the Hindu goddess smoking a cigarette. In the background, the rainbow flag, symbolising the LGBT community can also be seen.

The Madurai-born film-maker wrote on Twitter that she was "super thrilled to share the launch" of the film at the Aga Khan Museum as part of its 'Rhythms of Canada' segment.

The poster sparked outrage with netizens slamming it for hurting Hindu sentiments due to its depiction of the goddess. Kali is considered a source of power and symbolises the victory of good over evil, and is considered sacred by Hindus. Hours after her tweet, the hashtag ‘ArrestLeenaManimekalai’ also trended on Twitter, with some seeking Home Minister Amit Shah's intervention.

Police Complaint
Following the controversy, a police complaint was filed against the film-maker. Advocate Vineet Jindal filed the complaint against the director for the poster that took the Internet by storm. According to the lawyer, the poster was offensive and objectionable. He said such instances should not be tolerated and legal action should be taken against her.

"The way this lady has portrayed Goddess Kali while smoking and having an LGBT flag in the background is completely offensive and objectionable. Whatever it is, it could be a controversy, it could be a way to escalate their name. But, one thing I must tell you is that this should not be tolerated and legal action should be taken against her. I have filed a complaint against this lady and the Delhi police have lodged an FIR against her,” Jindal was quoted as saying by RepublicWorld.com. ..

“The film revolves around the events that take place one evening, when Kali appears and strolls the streets of Toronto. If you see the picture, don’t post the hashtag `arrest Leena manimekalai’, post the hashtag `love you Leena manimekalai’. This Kali talks about choosing love instead of hate in the midst of so many racial differences” Manimekalai, added.
