Hollywood is mourning the loss of acclaimed First Nations actor Graham Greene, best known for his Oscar-nominated role in Dances With Wolves. The Canadian star passed away peacefully at age 73, his manager confirmed on Monday. “It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of award-winning legendary Canadian actor Graham Greene,” manager Gerry Jordan told CBC News, adding the actor died of natural causes.
Greene’s breakthrough came in 1990, when he played Kicking Bird, a Lakota medicine man, in Kevin Costner’s epic western Dances With Wolves. The performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and cemented his place in Hollywood history.
Born a member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Greene’s path to stardom was anything but ordinary. Before acting, he worked as a draftsman, steelworker, and even a roadie for rock bands. He began his theatre career in the UK during the 1970s, later crediting stage acting for giving him the discipline to succeed in film.
The veteran actor also received numerous accolades, including the Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2004, and in 2016, he was inducted into the Order of Canada, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.
Graham Greene leaves behind a powerful legacy as a trailblazer for Indigenous representation in film and television and a body of work that will continue to inspire generations.
