The user's personal data remains fully in their control in a decentralized wallet.

Looking ahead, as regulations like the EU's MiCA come into effect, DeFi protocols will need to perform KYC checks on users in a compliant way. With verifiable credentials held in a user's wallet, they could use zero-knowledge proofs to demonstrate they have passed KYC without revealing sensitive data - enabling compliant access. Other potential use cases include restricting DAO access to verified Twitter users or limiting participation in a supply chain application to verified entities within a certain country.

By baking identity primitives into the base protocol and providing a framework for verifiable credentials with selective disclosure via zero-knowledge proofs, Concordium is providing dApps the tools needed to enforce compliance and protect user privacy. This becomes increasingly important as web3 matures and regulation advances. While adding friction to user flows, these identity checks are a necessary step in the evolution of web3.
