Vellalar History
A brief history of the Vellalas, who were the main driving force behind the propagation of Tamil languages and culture, is dealt with in this video. In their tradition the Vellalas are associated with the ‘plough’ and ‘flood control,’ and therefore, they have developed as a flourishing peasant community of the Tamil country. Many castes were born out of tribes. Many Vellala castes were born out of the pan-Vellala tribe. The origin of the Vellalas is to be traced to the Sangam Age of ancient Tamilagam. Edgar Thurston has stated that the Chera, Chola, and Pandya kings and most of the petty chiefs of Tamilakam belonged to the Vellala tribes.

The Vellalas are strongly represented in South India and Sri Lanka. They are divided into several sub-castes, like Tontaimantala Vellalas, Karkattha Vellalas, Saiva Vellalas, Nangudi Vellalas, Tuluva Vellalas, Choliya Vellalas, Nanchilnattu Vellalas, Kongu Vellalas, etc., depending either on the region of their origin or the actual place where they live. The Vellalas adopt the titles Pillai and Mudaliar by and large except the Kongu Vellalas who adopted the title of Gounders.

Vellalas in Medieval South India
During the eleventh century, the Vellalas‟ attempts to take control of the lands they used to cultivate can be seen as a first major step in the direction of mobility. They increased their efforts to establish control over land in the Kongu region and the Kaveri valley where a substantial population of the Vellala peasants existed. From the latter half of the eleventh century, we see an impressive process of change in their conditions when they shift from the status of cultivator to that of landholders.
