Euripides' Iphigenia Among the Taurians

Описание к видео Euripides' Iphigenia Among the Taurians

This video discusses Euripides' play Iphigenia Among the Taurians, another ancient Greek play from the Atreidae cycle. This play, more a romance than a tragedy, is about Iphigenia's rescue from the barbarous Taurians, whom Artemis had placed her with after the events of Iphigenia in Aulis, where Agamemnon attempted to sacrifice her (at Artemis' command). Basically, Orestes has now come to the land of the Taurians (at Apollo's command) to steal a statue of Artemis and bring it back to Athens. While doing this, he encounters and "rescues" his sister Iphigenia--I put "rescues" in quotes because he mounts a rescue, but it really requires Athena's intervention at the end to keep the Taurians from killing everybody.
