Groupthink: The Danger of a "Nod and Smile" Culture

Consensus decision-making is just this side of groupthink, and groupthink is a dangerous way to make decisions. When people are so committed to reaching consensus, they tend to put harmony and cohesion above critical evaluation and analysis. They set aside their own thoughts, refrain from raising questions or exposing potential pitfalls rather than to “slow the group down.” But, this leads to irrational or problematic decisions. Group think can transform a team of bright, creative, independent thinkers into a group of people nodding and smiling while keeping their very best ideas to themselves.
