Are digital snakes only a single CAT 5e/6/7 cable? Marketing says they are?

There are many great digital consoles on the market. Each of them have their own solutions for a full digital snake setup. In this video we reference Presonus and their digital snake solution. This should give you an idea of what is involved with setting up a "digital snake" with a digital console.

About latency:
Latency exists in all digital gear and does NOT indicate any issues or problems. Latency can be reduced by using 1Gb network equipment designed for audio systems.

** A few points on why we did this video: **
The video was to show (potentially) the amount of gear that would be needed to replace an analog snake utilizing a FOH location crossover. Unfortunately, the marketing on "digital snakes" still focuses on a digital solution existing of only a single cat-5/6 cable, which is not correct.

The latency of a digital "path" can add up quickly if plugins are used on digital consoles. Presonus (AVB) has a default 2ms latency. Dante has a default of 1ms. It would be nice to have an actual crossover solution built into a digital console; a solution existing of at least a Linkwitz/Riley and Butterworth filters along with adjustable slopes and a selectable 2/3/4 way setup (mono and/or stereo), and to include a cardioid setup. The Matrix method works, but professionally speaking, is not considered an actual solution.

I'm hoping digital consoles continue to improve. Stage Left Audio Productions is pro digital (we mix on other digital gear beyond what we carry) and we see digital as a solution to problems. As well, we are pro analog. These are tools of the trade and we use the best tool for the job.
