Ronnie Lee: He Started the Animal Liberation Front

Ronnie Lee is well known for cofounding the Band of Mercy and the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) in Britain, perhaps one of the most successful yet infamous organizations in the animal rights movement.

Starting out as a member of the Hunt Saboteurs Association (HSA) in the early 1970s, Ronnie and others started the offshoot organization, the Band of Mercy, in order to attack hunters' vehicles. This would lead to attacks against various forms of non-human animal oppression such as seal hunts, animal breeders and laboratories as well as the founding of the Animal Liberation Front. They would employ a wide range of tactics that would eventually land them in prison on multiple occasions.
