What is Supercapacitor or Ultracapacitor? A supercapacitor is also called as supercap, ultracapacitor or Goldcap. It is a high-capacity capacitor with capacitance values much higher than other capacitors (but lower voltage limits) that bridge the gap between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. The most commonly used electrode material for supercapacitors is carbon in various manifestations such as activated carbon, carbon fibre-cloth, carbide-derived carbon, carbon aerogel, graphite (graphene), graphane and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
Supercapacitors are used in applications requiring many rapid charge/discharge cycles rather than long term compact energy storage. Also, they are used in car booster packs and powerbanks.
Currently, the supercapacitors are expensive than Lithium/ion batteries.
