Playthrough with the Korea team. The King of Fighters '94 is the first entry in what would become SNK's most popular series. You get to pick a pre-set team of three characters, and fight against other teams in one on one battles. Once you beat one character, another jumps on, and the fight continues. You'll regain some health if you win a fight, and once all three members of the opposing team have been defeated, you win.
The main draw is how many characters are included. Several Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting characters are playable, but it also includes characters from Ikari Warriors and Psycho Soldier, some of SNK's older franchises. There are then some brand new characters created specifically for this game, including fan favorite Kyo Kusanagi. The main criticism everyone had with the cast is that you can’t select your characters individually, they are in pre-set teams which you can't change.
Gameplay combines a number of systems from other games. The POW gauge can be charged up Art of Fighting style (press down the A, B, and C buttons), but it will also fill up if you take damage, just like in Samurai Shodown. You can do heavy attacks by pressing the C and D buttons together, something taken from Fatal Fury. Desperation moves can be done when the POW gauge is full, but if your lifebar is flashing red, you can do them as often as you want -another idea from Fatal Fury.
The game features one boss, who quickly gained a reputation of being a key example of SNK boss syndrome: Rugal Bernstein. In the first round, he does not use special moves, but he can still be difficult to beat, and his normal punches and kicks still do chip damage when blocked. The general game plan is to get to the corner, and keep knocking him down with a jumping heavy attack as he approaches.
But then for round two he gets back up and decides to fight you with his "full strength", which is an understatement. He has two projectiles, both of which he can throw out quickly and do big damage. But those are nothing compared to his genocide cutter, a jumping kick which can beat anything you try against it. He has another special move called the god press, but that one isn't that difficult to avoid. He also has another move called the dark barrier, but he only tends to use that against projectiles, and nobody on the Korean team has projectile moves.
Speaking of the Korean team, I decided to use them because out of all the teams I've yet to 1CC this game with, they were the least desirable. I don't like Chang or Choi at all, Choi's moves suck against the CPU, and his desperation move input is too difficult. I guess Chang is ok to use in this, the CPU can fall for his ball swing and desperation moves a lot. Kim has it easy against Rugal, just keep using his hien zan over and over again to win.
This is another game that has a ton of issues with the Kaico cable I was using. Whenever a character gets knocked to the ground when they’re on the right side of the screen, the sound of them crashing never plays… unless they get knocked out, then it does. But there are issues with some of the music too, some of instruments or voices don’t play at times, like the Japan team stage. I have no idea why it does this but I know it’s not my console (I’ve tried two different Neo Geos!). I’ve tried another Kaico lead and even a lead from another brand but the same thing happened. Maybe new technology meeting old technology just isn’t meant to be sometimes.
