हर साल गणतंत्र दिवस पर नई दिल्ली के Kartavya Path पर आयोजित परेड में 21 तोपों की सलामी देश के सर्वोच्च सम्मान का प्रतीक मानी जाती है। इस ऐतिहासिक परंपरा की शुरुआत 26 जनवरी 1950 को देश के पहले राष्ट्रपति Rajendra Prasad के ध्वजारोहण के दौरान हुई थी।
21 तोपों की सलामी तीन राउंड में दी जाती है, जिसमें हर राउंड में 7 फायर किए जाते हैं। यह पूरी प्रक्रिया 52 सेकेंड में पूरी होती है, क्योंकि राष्ट्रगान की अवधि भी 52 सेकेंड की होती है। जैसे ही तिरंगा फहराया जाता है, राष्ट्रगान शुरू होता है और उसी समय बैकग्राउंड में तोपों की सलामी दी जाती है।
