🔸 ABSTRACT 🔸
In this panel, I discuss the impacts of digital technologies on old and new ways of exploitation, oppression and social domination. In close dialogue with the contributions of hacker-activism and Frantz Omar Fanon's anti-capitalist anti-racism, I propose to analyze aspects of A.I from a hacker-Fanonian perspective. That means: every technique is socio-technical, the ethical aspects of AI cannot be separated from the broader economic context of Big Data and Big Techs. The development of AI has moved in the direction of investor profit. Ethical aspects have been systematically ignored. Digital colonialism can be defined as "the use of digital technology for the political, economic and social domination of another nation or territory" (Kwet, 2019), but here, the concept is also used to think about two types of social contradictions associated with it: 1. the new processes of data extraction and processing with a view to social profiling and behavior prediction, a phenomenon understood as "primitive data accumulation" given the symbolic violence and the capacity for economic expropriation that underlies it. 2. The phenomenon of "codified racialization" which consists of reflection on the unequal distribution of A.I. risks, both in relation to gender and racial biases and in relation to unequal racial access to technologies.

🔸 ABOUT THE WORKSHOP 🔸
As AI development takes over headlines across the globe, it becomes clearer how such technologies have pushed societies toward further environmental exploitation and wealth and power concentration. Such development has often overlooked the diverse cultural, historical, and social contexts of marginalised communities, in particular Indigenous groups and those from the Majority World. To foster a multifaceted perspective on AI ethics, a pluriversal approach needs to be employed.
The two-day workshop “AI Ethics from the Majority World: Reconstructing the Global Debate Through Decolonial Lenses” offers a forum to discuss alternatives to the status quo of AI ethics. Hosted by the University of Bonn’s Institute for Sciences and Ethics, the workshop aims to advance a reconstruction of the proliferated perspectives of AI ethics, dominantly shaped by ethical standards from historically hegemonic groups in the Minority World, by examining the plural decolonial schools of thought that challenge the positions that have shaped AI development worldwide.
