The growing number of trucks and the increasing axle loads cause hard conditions for usage of automobile roads, especially of those based on organic binders. The main issue arising due to high axle loads and a huge traffic intensity involves deformation of asphaltic concrete road pavements constructed with the use of conventional bitumens.

In order to enhance the reliability of pavements and to extend their service life, polymer modified bitumens are currently used.

GlobeCore has developed a stream bitumen modification unit — USB-3. Transportation of such unit can be carried out by any mode of transport; the unit is easily installed and quickly connected.

All of that is feasible, because USB-3 constitutes a set of components and assemblies installed on a single frame. Another advantage of this compact layout is that it allows the unit to be operated by the minimum number of personnel — two operators.

The unit is completed with a spiral lift (screw) to adjust the amount of polymer feed.

At the beginning of work, the operator pours the polymer from the bags into the hopper after which the polymer is fed by a screw conveyor into the mixing chamber. Along with the polymer, a separate pump feeds the bitumen preheated to the operating temperature (180 °C) from the boiler into the mixing chamber; furthermore, dosing pumps feed a plasticizer and an adhesion additive. The polymer is wetted with bitumen after which the polymer evenly distributed in the bitumen is homogenized in a hydrodynamic mixer from where it is fed into the mill for further grinding. Depending on the required concentration of polymer in bitumen, the operator is able to control the rotation speed of the spiral lift (screw) drive and thus ensure the specified polymer feed.

The widespread use of modified bitumens instead of conventional ones is explained by their improved properties. Polymer bitumens have a wide range of operating temperatures (the difference between the softening temperature and the brittleness temperature) — up to 100 °С (conventional bitumens — up to 60 °С).
Asphaltic concretes prepared using polymer bitumens have a high deformation resistance due to a great elasticity of the bitumens used. Moreover, asphaltic concrete aging is considerably slowed down.
