In this episode, we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, with our dog, to Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. Beechworth is a well-preserved historical town located in the north-east of Victoria, famous for its major growth during the gold rush days of the mid-1850s.

We free camped behind The Plough Inn in Tarrawingee VIC. It is a free camping space behind the pub – you do need to book your place with a phone call, and to show your appreciation, it’s recommended you have a meal in the bistro and have a drink.

On the second night we free camped at Yack Campsite in Stanley, Victoria not far from Yackandandah. This free campground offers toilets. It is dog friendly. It is accessible to motorbikes, RVs, camper trailers and caravans. Camping in tents is allowed. You must be fully self-contained.

BEECHWORTH BAKERY
It all started in 1974, when Tom O’Toole bought the original Beechworth Bakery building, then called the Ideal Café & Milk Bar. He continued with that name but sold the business only three years later. So, really, it all began in 1984, when Tom bought the building for the second time. And this time he called it the Beechworth Bakery.
Built in 1857, the original building was erected as single storey commercial premises, with a second storey and balcony added around 1900. Old legal documents reveal the premises have been home to a shoe shop, dining room and pastry shop.
That same year Tom also bought the drapers next door and extended the production and baking areas at the rear. He doubled the floor space and entrances for customers by opening up into the former drapery premises, and created an outdoor area on the sidewalk to extend seating.

OLD BEECHWORTH GAOL
Get behind the walls and hear about the more than 120 year history of the site. Opening in 1864, The Old Beechworth Gaol is one of Australia’s most significant post-European cultural sites. With more than just the Ned Kelly story having many other characters spending time behind bars and more than a few who helped keep them there.

WOODSHED FALLS
Located in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park, Woolshed Falls are a popular destination for nature lovers and history buffs.
The area was once the center of one of the richest goldfields in Australia, where up to 8,000 prospectors camped along the banks of Spring Creek, in search of their fortune.
The falls are a ten-minute drive north from Beechworth, where you can view the cascading falls, enjoy a leisurely picnic or take a self-guided walk around the alluvial gold workings. An observation deck provides views to falls and the valley below, which is particularly spectacular after heavy rainfalls. Please be very careful on the rocks as they are slippery, and kids should not be left unsupervised in this area. Suitable, sturdy footwear is advised. This waterfall site isn’t pet-friendly.
