In September two thousand sixteen, Nevada’s Battle Mountain road seemed like any ordinary stretch of highway. But for a small group of engineers, athletes, and visionaries, this was the stage where human power would make history. Todd Reichert is a Canadian engineer, educated at the University of Toronto. Since childhood, he had been fascinated by human-powered vehicles. This passion led him and the AeroVelo team to design cutting-edge vehicles that pushed the limits of what was possible. One of their crowning achievements was a bike named Eta.

Eta was no ordinary bicycle. Its aerodynamic design, cutting-edge engineering, and low riding position were all meticulously crafted to minimize air resistance. This machine was built to challenge the very limits of human potential.

Reichert and his team chose Battle Mountain for its ideal conditions: a straight, flat road and minimal wind. Their goal was ambitious—to surpass one hundred forty-four kilometers per hour. As he picked up speed, Eta became a blur on the horizon, cutting through the air like a bullet. Pedal stroke by pedal stroke, Todd accelerated toward history. Passing through the two-hundred-meter measurement zone, he achieved what many thought impossible. Eta reached a top speed of one hundred forty-four point one seven kilometers per hour, breaking the world record for human-powered speed.

Todd Reichert’s accomplishment resonated far beyond the sports world. It was a triumph of engineering, showing just how effective and efficient human-powered vehicles could be.

But Todd’s achievements don’t stop with this record. He and the AeroVelo team had already made history before. In two thousand thirteen, they won the Sikorsky Prize with Atlas, a human-powered helicopter that met the challenge of staying airborne for sixty seconds. Todd also piloted the Snowbird, the world’s first human-powered ornithopter, achieving flight through flapping wings.

This speed record, however, solidified his legacy, combining both engineering innovation and unmatched physical performance.
