"Though born of a paranormal experience that preceded a series of tour disasters — car troubles, show cancellations, and the like — Simulation isn’t beholden to its accidental genesis. In fact, for anyone familiar with Whitney Johnson and Laura Callier’s solo outlets Matchess and Gel Set, respectively, it’s hard not to see the electronic duo relishing their brush with the incomprehensible. Throughout her catalog as Matchess, Whitney Johnson has channeled wandering synthscapes and tape manipulation to explore both the occult and the inexplicable; while Gel Set combines Laura’s witty observations with rhythmic, futurist sound and a visual vocabulary influenced by the eldritch and the muculent. Simulation’s debut Nalumbanet combines the best of both worlds, pairing the rhythm section of Gel Set with the meandering synths of Matchess. An added bonus: since the duo is unsure as to the nature of their paranormal visitor, they’ve encoded an EVP sample and a hidden message or code for our extraterrestrial friends.
