Описание к видео The northern broken dash butterfly Wallengrenia egeremet

The Northern Broken-Dash (Wallengrenia egeremet) is a butterfly species known for its distinctive broken dash marking on the forewings of males. Females have elongated cream-colored spots on their forewings. A member of the Hesperiidae family, commonly referred to as skippers. This butterfly is found across eastern North America, ranging from southern Maine and Ontario in the north to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and southeastern Texas.
Wingspan of 1 to 1.5 inches. The butterfly is generally brown, with the male having some orange-brown markings near the stigma and the female having yellowish markings. The underside of the hindwing often has a pale band of spots, sometimes with a backward 3 shape. They inhabit grassy areas, often near woodlands, and can be found in open fields and meadows. The caterpillars feed on taller-growing panic grasses, such as Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). In Canada, they typically fly from late June to early August, while in the southern US, they may have two generations per year. The Northern Broken-Dash is often confused with other similar skipper species, including the Southern Broken-Dash (W. otho), Dun Skipper (Euphyes vestris), and Little Glassywing (Pompeius verna). These are sometimes referred to as the "3 witches" due to their similar appearance. The Northern Broken-Dash was first described by Samuel Scudder, who named it Thymelicus aetna (later moved to Wallengrenia egeremet). He based his description on a type specimen collected in Massachusetts.
