Keeping Your Puppy Fresh and Clean: A Step-by-Step Grooming Plan

NEW PUPPY GROOMING ROUTINE - In this video, I am giving you a routine to do different grooming activities like bathing, brushing, nail clipping, etc, and also a proper way to do all that.

Daily Grooming Routine:

Let’s start with Hair Brushing:
This is one of the most important grooming activity, and probably most loved by your puppy. Brushing helps the puppy to get rid of loose hairs, prevents painful hair mats, and keeps the coat shiny and healthy.

How to brush a puppy’s hair properly?
Brush in the direction of hair growth. Don’t apply too much pressure while brushing, your puppy must feel like he’s being petted.

Tooth brushing:
To remove a little bit of tartar and plaque and make the puppy’s breath fragrant, consider brushing the puppy's teeth.

How to brush a puppy’s teeth properly?
Take the paste on the brush, and let the puppy smell it first. If he likes it, he will lick it, and if he does, you’re ready to go. 1-2 minutes of not-so-detailed brushing is enough for the puppy.

Weekly Grooming Routine:

Bathing:
Vets recommend bathing a puppy/dog, twice a month. But to me, that’s a long gap in between. That’s why I have divided bathing into two different types: Cleaning and Medicated.

Take any day of the week, on which you like to bathe your puppy, for example, Sunday. Every Sunday you have to bathe your puppy. The first Sunday is for cleaning bath, and the second Sunday is for a medicated bath. In the cleaning bath, we are using some mild products, to remove dirt from the puppy, and make him smell good. In medicated bathe, we are using some harsh products, products which are for tick prevention, hair fall, and or problems like that.

How to bathe a puppy?
Take a puppy on a leash, this way you will have better control over him, and you can stop him from running away. Puppy skin is very sensitive than ours, make sure that the water is less hot than you need to bathe yourself, but not very cold either. Also, you may require a Shampoo (or product of choice), a towel, cotton balls, and pet wipes.

Step 1: Put Cotton balls inside the dog’s ears, but not too deep.
Step 2: Wet the puppy’s body completely first, and keep the face dry.
Step 3: Apply the product. Massage every body part of the puppy but not the face
Step 4: As properly as you have applied the product, remove it more properly than that.
Step 5: Use just the pet wipes (no water, no product), to clean the area near the puppy’s eyes and the ear flap.
Step 6: Now the bathe is completed, take out the cotton balls from the ears, and make the puppy dry using a towel.

Monthly Grooming Routine:

Nail Clipping:
As in our homes, there’s not much activity due to which our puppy's nails become long and sharp.

How to cut a puppy’s nails?
Get a good quality nail clipper and cut the puppy’s nails, as you cut yours (No Rocket Science). If you cut a large portion of the puppy’s nails, you might cut the “quick” and the puppy will start to bleed. Quick is the name of a blood vessel, that is at the roots of the dog’s nails.

Hair Trimming:
Once every two to three months, hair trimming is another grooming activity to consider if you have a large-haired dog breed. You can trim puppy’s hairs from places like around the eyes, around the anus, from the chin and lower jaw, below paws, at arms.
