"Maya is a priestess in a noble family of Eothas worshippers from the Deadfire Archipelago. When fame came to the family several generations ago, so did fortune and a noble title that was acquired using said fortune.

Despite being all fair and legal (for the Deadfire), there was those who thought it was "not appropriate" and set about to ruin the family. In the end, their jealousy drove them to success and Maya away from her home.
