At only 31 years of age, major trumpet player and champion of a lofty notion of jazz, Wynton Marsalis, already a star, appears at the Munich Philharmonic Hall in a septet, with two Grammys under his belt—classical and jazz at the same time—just one year after having been named as a mentor at the Jazz in Marciac festival.

A native of New Orleans, Marsalis cultivates a style of jazz that’s demanding, classical and yet grounded, in which sophistication takes nothing away from its popular character. Tinged with the blues of his birthplace and big-band swing, Marsalis’ jazz encompasses a vital thrust, intensity and technique.

As part of the 1992 Münchner Klaviersommer series of jazz concerts, with the majestic In This House, On This Morning, modeled after an African-American religious service—hope, failing and redemption—Marsalis celebrates the “triumphant music” of which Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke.
