Wikipedia & Social Justice: How students are enhancing representation and equity

To mark the start of the new academic year, Wiki Education’s September Speaker Series brought together faculty from across the country to explore themes of social justice, representation, and knowledge equity within the context of their teaching and coursework on Wikipedia. Panelists shared how students are tackling some of Wikipedia’s biggest knowledge equity gaps by contributing to subjects and peoples that have been historically underrepresented on Wikipedia and beyond. They also examined how this impactful work introduces students to the complexities and challenges of knowledge creation and dissemination, as well as the responsibilities associated with public-facing scholarship.

Panelists:

Tracy Perkins, Arizona State University
Mack Scott, Brown University
Delia Steverson, University of Alabama
Jennifer Stoever, Binghamton University
Helaine Blumenthal, Wiki Education (moderator)
