STORYLINE
Pakistan's suspended chief justice on Sunday called for ensuring the rule of law for strengthening democratic institutions, saying basic rights were usually available to people in those countries where the law and constitution were not changed in a haste.
"A guarantee has been given in the constitution book, that this country will be a democratic country," he said while addressing a gathering of about 2-thousand lawyers and supporters from the opposition parties in the eastern city of Lahore.
"No other system can run in this country except from the democratic, so if you want to respect the constitution you should build strong democratic institutions. and also implement them," he added.
It was the smallest anti-government rally attended by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry since 9 March when the President General Pervez Musharraf suspended him, sparking nationwide protests.
Lawyers chanted "Go, Musharraf Go," among other slogans when Chaudhry arrived in Lahore from Islamabad.
His caravan covered a distance of 25 kilometres (15 miles) in about 10 hours due to heavy traffic on the roads.
Musharraf has been confronted with the worst political crisis of his presidency since he suspended Chaudhry, accusing him of nepotism, misconduct and abusing his office to get a prized job for his son.
Chaudhry denies the charges, and has been fighting a legal battle to be reinstated.
