How to: Setup A Skew Block Plane

Episode 11. How to set up a Lie Nielsen No 140 Skew Block Plane. I’ve been using this plane in the Spar series of videos. I used it straight from the box, having not touched it since I bought it at the Classic Hand Tools stand at the Harrogate Show in November 2019. Actually bought it from Tom Lie Nielsen himself, who was helping out. He also managed to sell my wife an £80 hammer (for jewellery)

For the Spar series, all I did to it was sharpen the blade and get going. I should have checked it over first. Find out what the problem was in this episode. I was just thinking; I also took the No 5 1/2 straight out the box, sharpened the blade and chip breaker and got going. I should have fettled that first too. That’ll be a video soon.

A note about the channel: I’m amazed by how much work it takes to edit these episodes. For that reason, I’m behind my self imposed schedule of an episode every four working days. Today should’ve been episode 13. But, I’ve got at least another three “in the can”, so I’m going to make strenuous efforts to catch up. This episode only took two afternoons to edit, so I’m getting the hang of it. Good fun though. Similar kind of effort to learning to fly a new airliner and I’ve done that four times. Yes, it’s my schedule, so I can ignore it if I want, but I’m afraid I’ll get discouraged if I do.
