When training a dog, there are many forms of pressure we can use—leash pressure, tactile pressure, spatial pressure, and psychological pressure.

Sometimes we trip ourselves up without realizing it. For example, facing off with a dog can create psychological pressure because it mimics spatial pressure. To a dog, spatial pressure is real communication—it’s part of the natural language of many species.

If we want to nurture pack drive and encourage a dog to follow, it’s often better to simply turn and walk in the direction we want them to go, rather than facing them and beckoning them to come. Sensitive dogs, in particular, can feel pressured to the point of slipping into defense drive.

Pay attention to how your body position influences your dog. Know when to face them—and when to turn away—so the pressure you apply works for you, not against you.
