In this video, we are going to learn how to light a stage with even light. It is important that the stage can be viewed from multiple viewpoints and even cameras.

Often the terms 3-point and 4-point lighting refer to studio lighting for specific cameras. We are going to be looking at stage 4-point lighting which is designed for live audiences.

While studio lighting aims to create balanced light with shadows and highlights, theatrical four point lighting aims to create even lighting from all viewing angles. This method is often called jeweled lighting.

The key light is aimed directly at the subject to provide the primary light source. The goal is to illuminate the subject for as many viewing angles as possible.

After the key light, the fill light is added. For stage lighting, it is typical to place to fill lights on each side of the stage at a 90-degree angle from the key lights. Once again, fill lights are used to give a more natural light that eliminates shadows coming from the key lights. This counts as our second and third point in the four-point stage lighting.

Next, we will want to add a backlight to separate the subject from the backdrop.

To successfully illuminate the whole stage, this lighting set-up is replicated for each position on stage. The final effect is an even wash of light across the stage key, fill, and backlight on every subject.
