On April 27, I lined up at the start of the 100 Mile Canyons Endurance Run by UTMB, well-prepared and excited to complete my first UTMB qualifying race. It was not meant to be. The weather conditions and the brutal course unfortunately was too much for my lower back injury. I handed back my race bib at the Deadwood 2 aid station after 18 miles (28 km) and 10,000 feet (3,000 m) of total elevation change, including 5,400 feet (1,650 m) of steep descent on muddy, technical trails. Sometimes we learn more from failure than from success. I recap the race and share my quick thoughts, including lessons learned. The Canyons 100-miler is a beautiful, challenging event on the Western States trail, and I will be back to finish what I did not get done this weekend.
