Doctor Furlan will explain:
Neuropathic pain is a type of pain caused by a disease or injury to the nervous system. The nerve system includes the peripheral nerves, the spinal cord and the brain. Diseases such as diabetic neuropathy, stroke or multiple sclerosis may cause neuropathic pain.
Neuropathic pain affects 8% of the general population.
Treatments include drugs and non-pharmacological interventions.
Drugs that are used to treat neuropathic pain include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, opioids, cannabinoids and topical creams.
We can also use injections and nerve blocks to alleviate the symptoms of neuropathic pain.
Physical modalities such as heat, TENS, acupuncture are also used to treat neuropathic pain, as well as cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT), hypnosis and mindfulness.
