This February I’m entering the Cheap Bike Buildoff 2026 — a creator-inspired challenge where you have to build a custom bike on a strict budget of $175 (about £130) using only properly sourced, branded parts.

No cheap knockoffs, no “free parts loopholes,” and everything has to be priced as if it came from your local bike co-op. That usually means getting creative with second-hand parts, clever upgrades, and smart restorations.

Last year’s bright green build made it all the way to the quarterfinals — and was actually the first video on the channel to pass 10,000 views — so this year I want to go even bigger.

This time I’ve got two possible bikes for the challenge:

A worn but stylish modern beach cruiser with lots of patina

A classic 80s/90s Specialized Hard Rock GSX that’s perfect for upgrades

I’ve already sourced some period-correct and interesting parts — including orange Marzocchi forks, vintage shifters, and RaceFace grips — but the big decision is up to you.
