16 Weeks Pregnancy (I cannot believe baby is 16 weeks gestation already)

How big is baby at 16 weeks of pregnancy?

Baby is 5 inches long now! & 1/2 of a pound in weight :)

When will I start showing in pregnancy?

I am definitely showing at 16 weeks!
-My clothes are starting to not fit! The band on the belly is just too tight for comfort LOL

When will I feel baby start moving?

-I am feeling little flutters and small movements now at 16 weeks pregnant! My husband still cannot feel baby kicking from the outside. The kicks are inconsistent but I think I am definitely feeling her now.

What do they look for at the 16 Week anatomy scan in pregnancy?

-Measure cervical length to make sure there is no cervical shortening
-Looking at all babies structures - the heart, spine, anatomy, brain, kidneys, make sure the abdominal wall is on the inside of babies body or protruding outside the abdominal wall (I have seen a baby born with this in a high risk pediatric hospital)... they will look for anything that could be abnormal like club feet and hands. They will look at the facial features and make sure there is no cleft lip.
-Look at the placenta and blood-flow and make sure everything is flowing and functioning the way it should. They will actually show you blood moving in and out of the cord, it is pretty incredible!
-They will make sure the placenta is not positioned over the cervix. My placenta was a complete placenta previa at 16 weeks! You cannot have a vaginal birth with a placenta previa unless the placenta moves far enough away from the cervix before your due date there is a 99% chance the placenta will move off of the cervix far enough to deliver vaginally by 32 weeks. They do not worry about placenta previa until after that time. If your placenta is still too close to your cervix or covering your cervix at 32 weeks, then the docs will start discussing C-Section.

Why is cervical length important to monitor in pregnancy?

Between 16-24 weeks pregnancy cervical length is measured to look for shortening of the cervix. The shorter the cervix, the easier it is for the cervix to open up this is more common is women who have had procedures like a LEEP If the cervix opens up and dilates, it can lead to preterm birth (anytime you go into labor before being 36 weeks pregnant) If they find a short cervix they can take measures to prevent the cervix from opening. One thing they will do is a cerclage placement which is essentially stitching your cervix shut.

Next appointment with the OB is at 24 weeks! Next ultrasound is the anatomy scan at 20 weeks pregnancy.
