The Lodestar is the creation of artist Randy Polumbo. It's made from a section of a fighter plane, with a wire mesh viewing platform shaped like a version of the Seattle Space Needle, and steep interior stairs to get to the top. At night, this giant sculpture is lit up in different colors.

Randy Polumbo lives and works in New York City and Joshua Tree, California as a visual artist, master builder, and sometime designer. A graduate of The Cooper Union School of Art, his work has been exhibited nationally and abroad and is in the collection of the Museum of Old and New Art, (MONA.)

Bombay Beach is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California, United States. It is located on the Salton Sea, 4 miles (6.4 km) west-southwest of Frink and is the lowest community in the United States, located 223 feet (68 m) below sea level.

The population declined for years and the buildings were rotting away, but by 2018, a number of people had moved into the settlement. An article in The Guardian stated that it was "enjoying a rebirth of sorts with an influx of artists, intellectuals and hipsters who have turned it into a bohemian playground". The Bombay Beach Biennale (pronounced like "be an ollie"), an annual art festival, is held here. The population estimate for 2020 was 415 persons.
