First Researcher of India: JC BOSE

The roleplay revolves around JC Bose and his ups and downs in life which made him achieve the title of “Father of Wifi”.

Bose was born in a Bengali Kayastha family who wanted him to learn about Indian culture. At that time, sending children to English schools was an aristocratic status symbol, his father sent him to the vernacular school where he sat with children of all caste and creed.

Bose's work in radio microwave optics was specifically directed towards studying the nature of the phenomenon and was not an attempt to develop radio into a communication medium. He was the first to use a semiconductor junction to detect radio waves. His experiments took place during this same period (from late 1894 on) when Guglielmo Marconi was making breakthroughs on a radio system specifically designed for wireless telegraphy.

Bose subsequently made a number of pioneering discoveries in plant physiology. He used his own invention, the Crescograph, to measure plant response to various stimuli, and thereby scientifically proved parallelism between animal and plant tissues. Although Bose filed for a patent for one of his inventions because of peer pressure, his objection to any form of patenting was well known.

Bose approached the British officials with a request to set up a research institute in India but they saw it as a step towards development,hence, they declined his request. In protest, he refused to take their salary and established the Bose Institute, Asia's first research institute, in 1917.

Whenever we think of India, culture and religion comes to one's mind but the stereotypical mind turns on when we think of development in science and technology. It is necessary for us to embark on some major science ideas which were born in India.
